Portsmouth Golf Club was formed in 1926 and since 1972 has played over the Portsmouth City Council course on Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth, Southsea and Langstone Harbour. The club is a private members club with over 500 members comprising men, ladies, juniors and male veterans and is fully affiliated via the Hampshire County Union to the English Golf Union and the English Ladies Golf Association. We have an extensive competition calendar in all categories and welcome new members of all categories and all standards. The course is now leased from Portsmouth City Council by Glendale Golf who offer a very flexible system of season tickets and green fees - see Prices for details. Note that the season tickets are also pro-rata running to April 2007

NATIONAL FINALS

Top of the list for individual honours is Peter Parvin for his performances in the NAPGC National Championships this year. Peter qualified for the Men's Championships through the Regional Final at Bournemouth by finishing 2nd in his division. This took him to the National Finals at Woodhall Spa where Peter won Divison 3 (handicaps 12-19). Richard Peckham and Ron Quarrington Jnr also qualified from the Regional Final at Bournemouth. Meanwhile, in the other National competition, the UK Public Courses Championship, Peter qualified as Division winner again from the Regional Finals at Hoebridge to travel to St. Andrews for the National Finals. Also qualifying from Hoebridge were Mark McGinn and Shaun Richards. At St Andrews Peter was again successful winning 2nd place nationally in the 13-19 handicap range. Mark McGinn and Shaun Richards also represented the club at St Andrews for a good all-round performance.
(Note that for this 'Ultra' performance Peter's handicap has been well and truly cut.)

JHB SHIELD

Congratulations to the Portsmouth Ladies team of Hazel Quarrington, Debbie Thistleton, Teresa Paffett and Jackie Cushion who took the 2nd place Gross prize in the JHB Shield National Finals at Thornbury GC, Bristol. This follows on from their success in 2004 when they took the overall Nett prize in the National Finals also at Thornbury.

CHARITY EVENTS

2005 has been an outstanding year for the club in terms of Charity Events. In January we raised £3,310 at very short notice for the Tsunami Appeal. The money was donated to Friends of the Maldives (check out their website at www.friendsofmaldives.co.uk/aidmoney.html).

At the end of April the club ran the Rowans Hospice Charity Day and thanks to some very generous sponsorship raised £8,500. Thanks here go to Barter Durgan and Strada Contractors as main sponsors along with George Hunt who put up £500 worth of golf equipment to raise money from a prize draw. We also must thank Belville Rodair International (Heathrow) who donated lots of prizes as well as cash.

Finally, in August we had our Laurie Marples Memorial Trophy where the club raised £400 for English Blind Golf. The day was well attended by the family of Laurie Marples and by Mike Loten of English Blind Golf.

GLENDALE

As of 1st February 2005, the management of Portsmouth Golf Course was taken over from Portsmouth City Council by Glendale Leisure Services. Glendale have a 5-year plan for course and clubhouse improvement but this year the main improvement has been a refurbishment of the clubhouse. Breakfasts are now served from 8am onwards at weekends and on Fridays and Wednesdays. In the longer term they will be looking at significant improvements to drainage. The course will still be open to the public for play.
